International students are not required to be able to speak Hungarian in order to participate in the programmes of the University of Debrecen (if the programme in question is offered in English).
Nonetheless, you are encouraged to learn some Hungarian to be able to communicate with the local people (although the majority of young people and, certainly, your teachers will speak English, and some will speak German, French, Spanish or Italian). In order to facilitate your learning Hungarian, you can join various Hungarian language classes.
A firm knowledge of English (B2 level according to CEFR) is absolutely necessary to follow the courses in English. Some programmes may require proof of your language skills.
