Debrecen has often been called ‘Calvinist Rome’ for its long traditions of Calvinism. It dates back to 1536, when the spread of the ‘new’ religion started. Catholics were not even allowed to settle in the city for more than one and a half century, up until the beginning of the 18th century, when Debrecen came under Joseph I’s rule. Today, all the most important denominations of the country can be found in Debrecen.
