About the Green Travel Option

Valid from September 2022 until revoked

Green travel is a key priority of the new Erasmus+ programme phase, and mobility participants will receive additional support if they choose a more sustainable form of travel.

According to the European Commission's current information, the definition of green travel is:

Sustainable means of transport (green travel): Sustainable means of transport (green travel) is defined as the travel that uses low-emissions means of transport for the main part of the travel, such as bus, train or car-pooling (Erasmus+ Programme Guide 2022. p. 408).

Participants can prove which form of mobility they have undertaken by means of travel documents or, in the absence of such documents, a signed criminal declaration.

In the case of mobility of higher education staff (STA and STT), participants always receive a travel allowance

In the case of green staff mobility, the green travel rate will apply.

  • Depending on the institution's decision, a subsistence allowance may be granted for two travel days, and a maximum of four travel days for green travel.

In the case of student mobility, a travel allowance is granted in the following cases:

  • participants on short mobility who are also in receipt of an equal opportunities grant
  • for participants travelling to a partner country, unless the host country is Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican, Faroe Islands, Switzerland or the United Kingdom

The "distance" is understood as the one-off distance between the sending and receiving institution and should be calculated using the Distance Calculator (http://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/tools/distance_en.htm). The amount indicated is for the return journey!

For student mobility without travel allowance:

  • Students not in receipt of a travel allowance are entitled to a one-off travel allowance of €50 for green travel and a living allowance for up to 4 additional travel days.
  • Students on short mobility and recent graduates may receive a maximum of 2 travel days.
  • The number of green travel days is at the discretion of the institution!

General principles for green travel:

  • Green travel is defined as train, bus, car, caravan, bicycle or other sustainable means of transport (individual travel by car, boat or plane is NOT).
  • Green travel grants can only be awarded if the majority of the journey is made by sustainable means.
  • Green Travel Allowance will NOT be granted if green travel is only in one direction.
  • Travellers can prove the mode of travel by means of travel documents or, failing this (e.g. in the case of car travel), by means of a criminal declaration.

Rules for the University of Debrecen

If the mobility is carried out in both directions using environmentally friendly means of transport (train, bus, carpooling), i.e. in a green way, students are entitled to an additional living allowance for extra days:

  • an additional 2 days of living allowance if the mobility takes place in a country neighbouring Hungary (i.e. Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia),
  • for an additional 4 days, a subsistence allowance is payable in all other cases. "

An official declaration signed by the University of Debrecen and the supported participant will serve as supporting documentation for the purpose of recording the realisation of the green travel. The participant is obliged to keep the proof of the trip (travel tickets, or in the absence thereof, or in the case of carpooling, a criminal declaration) and to hand it in to the International Office of the University of Debrecen after the mobility has been completed.
